NYSC Orientation Camp FAQs: Answers Prospective Corps Members Need

Heading to orientation camp soon? Here are clear answers to the questions prospective corps members ask most, based on information published by the NYSC. For anything specific to your state, your call-up letter and state NYSC secretariat have the final say.

How long is NYSC orientation camp?

The NYSC describes the orientation course as three weeks long. It is the first part of the service year and is compulsory for all graduates mobilised for national service.

When does the current camp start?

For 2026 Batch C Stream I, the orientation course runs from 30 September to 20 October 2026, according to the NYSC statement reported in the national press. See our Batch C Stream I guide.

Where is my camp?

Your camp is in your state of deployment, named on your call-up letter. Our list of NYSC orientation camp addresses gives the official address for all 36 states and the FCT.

What happens at camp?

According to the NYSC, the course includes physical training, drills, lectures on the people and traditions of the host state, professional lectures, skills acquisition and social activities such as dance, drama and inter-platoon competitions. Read what happens during the three weeks.

What is the swearing-in?

The course opens with a swearing-in ceremony. The NYSC says it is presided over by the state Governor or FCT Minister, with the Oath of Allegiance and National Pledge administered by the state or FCT Chief Judge.

What should I bring?

Your call-up letter, credentials and identification, passport photographs and photocopies, plus clothing and personal items for three weeks. Use our camp checklists.

Do foreign-trained graduates need originals?

Yes. The NYSC requires foreign-trained graduates to bring all original documents uploaded online, plus a translated certificate where applicable, and to be verified by the Verification Officer before leaving camp.

Do medical graduates need anything extra?

Yes — their practising licences, according to the NYSC.

Will I get a uniform?

Corps members are issued an NYSC kit at camp. Most bring extra white T-shirts, white shorts, socks and white canvas shoes.

When will I know my place of primary assignment?

At the end of the orientation course. The NYSC says it considers corps members' areas of specialisation, with emphasis on rural postings in agriculture, health, education and infrastructure.

Can I relocate?

The NYSC lists application for relocation after camp as a dashboard self-service, and concessional posting on marital or health grounds during registration. Approval is not automatic.

How should I travel to camp?

The NYSC advises corps members to avoid night journeys and to board vehicles only at designated motor parks. Travelling with others going to the same camp is safer and usually cheaper — find corps members travelling to your camp.

What comes after camp?

The service year continues with your primary assignment, Community Development Service, and finally winding-up and passing out, usually around the twelfth month.
