How to Plan Your Journey to an NYSC Camp in Another State

Being deployed to a state you have never visited is part of the NYSC experience — and one of the most common worries. With a bit of planning, the journey can be straightforward.

1. Pin down the exact destination

Your call-up letter names the state, but the orientation camp is often outside the capital. Look up your camp on our NYSC orientation camp addresses list. For example, the official list places:

• the Bayelsa camp in Boro Town, Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA
• the Kano camp at Kusala Dam, Karaye
• the Benue camp at Wannune, on the Makurdi–Gboko Road
• the Enugu camp at Agwu

Note the town and the nearest junction or landmark.

2. Work out the route

Break the trip into legs:

1. From your home to a designated motor park in your city
2. From that park to the state capital or the town nearest the camp
3. From there to the camp gate

Ask at the motor park which vehicles go closest to the camp town. The last leg is where people most often get stuck, so plan it before you leave.

3. Choose the right day and time

• Arrive in daylight. The NYSC advises corps members to avoid night journeys.
• On long routes, consider travelling the day before and staying overnight near the camp.
• Arrive early in the registration window rather than on the last day.

4. Pick your transport

The NYSC advises boarding vehicles only at designated motor parks. Registered transport companies with fixed departure times and tickets are usually the most predictable option. Keep your ticket and note the vehicle number.

5. Budget for the whole trip

Plan for:

• fares for each leg, including the final stretch to the camp gate
• food and water on the road
• a night's accommodation if you are travelling in two stages
• a buffer for delays

Travelling with others lowers the cost of taxis and shared vehicles for the final leg.

6. Travel with corps members going the same way

7. Pack for the road, not just for camp

• Documents in your hand luggage (see our camp documents checklist)

• Water and snacks
• Some cash in small denominations

8. Tell someone your plan

Share your route, vehicle details and expected arrival time with family, and message them when you reach camp.
