Sharing a Ride to NYSC Camp: How to Split Costs and Travel Safely as a Group

A shared ride is one of the easiest ways to cut the cost of getting to orientation camp — especially the last stretch from a motor park or junction to the camp gate. It also makes the journey safer and a lot more pleasant. Here is how to organise it properly.

Step 1: Find people going the same way

Start with people from your city going to the same camp. On TweleTwele's NYSC Camp Pairing, camp groups are organised by departure city and orientation camp, so you can see who is already planning the trip. If no group exists for your route, create one and share it with friends who have been deployed to the same state.

Step 2: Decide how you will travel

Common options:

• One commercial bus from a designated motor park, with the group sitting together
• A commercial bus to the nearest town, then a shared taxi to the camp gate
• A chartered vehicle booked through a registered transport company for the whole group

Whatever you choose, follow the NYSC's advice: board only at designated motor parks and avoid night journeys.

Step 3: Agree the costs before anyone pays

Money is where group trips go wrong. Agree in writing, in your group chat:

• What is shared (for example the charter or the final taxi) and what each person pays individually (their own bus ticket).
• How it is split — equally per person is simplest; split by seat, not by luggage, unless someone has an unusually large load.
• Who pays whom, and when — ideally each person pays the driver or company directly at the park.
• What happens if someone drops out at the last minute.

A good rule: no one sends money to another group member before you have met at the park.

Step 4: Plan the meeting

• Pick one designated motor park and a specific spot inside it.
• Set a meeting time early enough to leave and arrive in daylight.
• Share phone numbers and agree who will wait for late arrivals, and for how long.

Step 5: Travel safely together

• Keep your documents in your hand luggage.
• Share the vehicle number with family.
• Stay together from the park to the camp gate and, if possible, through registration.
• Look out for each other's bags at stops.

Step 6: Arrive together

Arriving as a group makes the first day of camp much easier. You already have people to queue with, share information with and look out for.

• Meet only in public places, such as the motor park itself.

• If something feels wrong, leave the group and travel another way.
